Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where can I find out what services and programs are available to older adults?

A: When looking for programs for older adults, contact the Area Agency on Aging in the region where the older adult lives. To find the Area Agency on Aging nearest you, call the Elder Care Locator at 1-800-677-1116.

Q: Is there an age requirement for obtaining services for an older adult?

A: Many programs require the person to be 65 or older, which is the Social Security retirement age. Others, such as those governed by the Older American's Act, set the age at 60 years or older.

Q: How do I find out the difference between Medicare and Medicaid?

A: The Michigan Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program (MMAP), a program for Medicare beneficiaries and their families, offers help with understanding Medicare and Medicaid eligibility, enrollment and coverage, medical bills, as well as Medicare supplemental and long term care insurance.

Q: My parents may need some help in their home to remain independent. What services are available that can help delay nursing home placement?

A: The Michigan MI-Choice program is designed to help medically frail individuals who may face nursing home placement by providing an array of services in the home.
